Norwegians just got more AI rights!

As of Sunday, 2 August, Norwegian deployers of European AI systems have transparency rights. If we are using a European AI system, that system must meet transparency obligations:
We have to easily see that we are interacting with an AI system
Output or content needs to be clearly labelled for us.
This applies to text, audio, image, and video.
Transparency requirements, are because the European Parliament has decided: if we can’t tell what has been created by a human versus an AI system - a news article, a video of a politician, a letter from your kid’s school - this could harm our trust in each other, in businesses, in the public sector. Therefore: we have the right to transparency.
Satisfying transparency requirements won’t always be easy. Check out the 51-page guidelines from the European Commission, which has been pushing out new help material for months.
And it won’t get easier, the longer we don’t have to think about them. Because while we as users already benefit from the AI Act, we don’t have to follow any requirements until Norway adopts the EU AI Act.
Unfortunately, we as users/deployers are not practicing the obligations that other Europeans now have:
Telling readers if we publish text on something important that hasn’t undergone human review
Telling people if we are using an AI system to categorize their emotions of biometrics.
We are going to quickly get used to our excellent new rights - while Norwegian providers and deployers, who aren’t required to implement them, are going to be woefully unprepared for the day we join the AI Act.
All the more reason to start preparing today!
